School History
Withernsea Central School was opened on the 5th September 1921. Originally with 140 students and 5 members of staff, including the Headmaster. The ground surrounding the school (which then occupied the present Junior School buildings) had been used as allotments.
The present buildings were opened in 1954 and serve Withernsea and the surrounding district. Buildings alone however, don’t make a good school. It’s what we stand for that matters, and our history sets out our values. Withernsea High School and was at the forefront of phasing out selective education and serving the needs of all students in the area. It is believed that this school was the first purpose-built comprehensive school in England. This record is something that we are proud to hold. We hope to continue to offer a good education for all of our students.
