Recent Results: Semi-final action for WHS footballers

19 April 2024 (by admin)

Withernsea's young footballers have been busy in recent weeks. Mr Mountain recaps the action...

Year 8 East Riding Schools Semi-final
Withernsea 1 - Wolfreton 2

Well done to Withernsea’s Year 8’s who gave a really good account of themselves against a very strong Wolfreton side. Sevie Farren managed to get the only goal for the home side, direct from a corner.

Year 11 Humberside Small Schools Cup Semi-final
Howden 4 - Withernsea 2

Withernsea unfortunately bowed out at the semi-final stage, just short of reaching another final. Richardson scored to make the game one all from a Windas pass and a very neat move allowed Leckonby to head home to make it 2-1 at half time.

Lapses from the WHS side meant Howden scored three goals in the second half, with their goalkeeper making some excellent saves. The game finished 4-2, with Withernsea's two goals being scored by Richardson and Leckonby.

Year 8 Small Schools Cup Semi-final
Holderness Academy 2 - Withernsea 3

Withernsea started bright and Beedham forced an early save from the goalkeeper. Farren, Campbell and Barker linked up numerous times down the left-hand side but nobody could get on the end of Barker’s crosses.

Eldon-Thomson made it 1-0 to Withernsea with a counterattack, with Stephenson-Cass playing the ball through and Archie charging onto it to coolly slot it home. Hunter made an excellent save on the stroke of half time to keep it 1-1.

After half time, and with the strength of the wind against us, we started slow and Holderness Academy gained the advantage with two quick goals to make it 2-1. Withernsea responded with Eldon-Thomson scoring after some neat play around the box.

With the game at 2-2, Macaulay Kitcher was putting his body on the line for the team - winning numerous tackles. He then clashed heads with an opposition player which left him with a nasty war wound. But the Withernsea side pushed forwards regardless and once again regained the lead when Lily Barker let fly with a rocket that ended up in the "top bins".

We held out for the rest of the game to win and progress through to the final. Goals were scored by Eldon Thomson (x2) and Barker.

Players of the match were Sevie Farren (voted by his team mates) and Millie Campbell (voted by the referee).
