Year 11 Football: Withernsea 7 – Driffield 4

16 November 2023 (by admin)

Congratulations to the Year 11 football team who, after a slow start, bounced back to win 7-4 against Driffield.

Withernsea began the game very slowly. With the wind causing havoc, a Driffield striker went clean through on goal to score.

WHS bounced back thanks to a long-range effort from Ben Richardson to bring the score level, 1-1. Driffield again took the lead thanks to some neat play by the attacker and an even better finish. The score became 3-1 when a very speculative free kick from their own half caught the wind and flew into the top corner.

This was arguably the worst performance that the WHS team had produced in their time at the school and the performance needed to step up if they had any chance to progress to the next round.

Unfortunately, it got off to a bad start as a Matthew Sleight pass was intercepted and the striker made it 4-1. This seemed to wake the lads up and from there it was a different game. Henry Barker made it 2-4 from a tight angle with a lovely, drilled strike. Tom Graham's (albeit a massive deflection) long-range effort sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-4, with a response of “put that in the Bulletin!”

Ben Richardson then found himself in some space to make it 4-4, with another stroke from distance. All the momentum was now on our side and Connor Bradley struck a lovely right foot strike to put us in front 5-4.

Mackenzie Ward produced an excellent save with his legs to keep us in front, before Ben Richardson completed his hat trick with a curling right-footed effort in the far corner.

There was still time for the tireless Matthew Lumb to get on the score sheet, with a crisp right-footed strike to round off an impressive personal performance and an excellent team second half, ending the game 7-4.

Congratulations to the team for a hard-fought win. They were a credit to the school in terms of behaviour and showed great team spirit and resilience to bounce back.

Well done to: Mackenzie Ward, Matthew Lumb, Matthew Sleight, Henry Barker, Connor Bradley, Tom Graham, Liam Frith, Alex Coyne, Zach Garbutt, Harrison Furley, Freddie Windas, Ben Richardson, Ashton Palmer, Oscar Duplock and Robbie Leckonby.

Goals: Ben Richardson (x3), Henry Barker, Tom Graham and Connor Bradley and Matthew Lumb.
