Hydrogen workshop helps to highlight clean green energy

A group of Year 10 students were recently given an opportunity to learn about hydrogen fuel cells and their use in clean green energy thanks to a workshop delivered by UKSTEM and representatives from the soon-to-be-built Yorkshire Energy Park.

As part of the school’s comprehensive Careers Programme, and in an event overseen by the Humanities faculty, students learned how hydrogen technology will be shaping the future of the Labour Market in our area.  They also experienced the hands-on use of hydrogen as an energy carrier by building and racing their own hydrogen-powered model vehicles.

Teams competed against each other to create the fastest moving or furthest travelling vehicle, experimenting with full cell management techniques to enhance performance of the models which were each fuelled by a small quantity of low-pressure hydrogen.

Exploring the future of green energy, skills and employment, students learned about the Yorkshire Energy Park and the estimated 4,480 jobs it will create in the next few years. These will sit alongside various apprenticeship and training opportunities, plus support for new business start-ups.

Careers Leader Viki Foster said: “It was very interesting to hear about the Yorkshire Energy Park, the future employment opportunities it will offer and the development of hydrogen fuel cells. The students fully engaged in the practical workshop and became very competitive when racing their own Hydro Buggies! We would like to thank our visitors for running a fantastic event and we look forward to further collaborations in the future.”

While Mike Cargill, School Governor and Managing Director of UKSTEM, added: “I’m delighted that we were able to bring the opportunity to explore this developing technology to students at Withernsea High. Withernsea is often seen as isolated but when it comes to the energy industry and future opportunities, it’s happening all around the Holderness area and Withernsea High students are ideally placed to take full advantage of the opportunities Yorkshire Energy Park will bring”.
