Year 7 students visit The Deep

On Wednesday 13th November, a group of Year 7 students enjoyed an after school visit to The Deep where they were given a private tour of the aquarium and took part in a shark-themed workshop.

The visit was organised as part of The Deep’s Science Club – a programme which aims to help improve confidence and inspire young people to take a greater interest in science.

Small groups are invited to attend when The Deep is quiet, giving participants an opportunity to ask questions and discuss scientific concepts in detail in a relaxed and informal setting – an opportunity they may not otherwise get during a regular visit.

The students enjoyed a full tour of The Deep, visiting the ever-popular Penguin enclosure and touch-tanks, before taking part in a workshop investigating the adaptation of sharks where they studied three different species to discover how each one had adapted for their survival.

Teacher of Science Abbie East was one of two staff who accompanied the students on their visit. Miss East commented: ‘Our Year 7s were fantastic and it was a pleasure to see them really engage with the experience. They asked lots of questions and delivered some great answers during the workshop. Having their own guided tour of The Deep was a great privilege that I know our students really appreciated.’

Careers Leader and Key Stage 5 Coordinator Viki Foster added: ‘Experiences such as these are highly beneficial for our students as they not only offer a taste of informal learning away from the classroom, they also help to promote potential careers to our students. This particular visit introduced our students to the specialist worlds of marine biology and conservation – opening their eyes to whole new sector of job opportunities which they may not have previously considered.’

The limited number of places available for this first trip were filled in record time, leaving many others to add their names to a reserve list. It is hoped that due to the level of interest, a second trip will run later in the academic year to allow those who missed out this time a chance to participate.

Information will be shared directly with students via the daily bulletin as and when opportunities become available.
