Phishing Emails - Safer Internet Day 2019

Like many other schools nationally, we have been affected by a recent flurry of 'phishing' emails.

Such emails can initially appear authentic, using genuine names and email addresses to gain people’s trust. However, some affected messages can contain links and attachments that are designed to exploit this trust to fraudulently collect data or to maliciously spread similar messages to other contacts.

Recent examples affecting contacts on our wscampus network have encouraged users to click a link to expand content within the main body of the email message.

If you receive a message you’re at all unsure about, particularly one containing unexpected links or attachments, please contact the sender directly to confirm its authenticity before clicking any links or opening attachments.

Today, Tuesday 5th February, is ‘Safer Internet Day’. Celebrated globally and coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day offers a great opportunity to talk to family and friends about the safe, responsible and positive use of technology.

Further information and resources, including guidance on dealing with phishing, can be found on the UK Safer Internet Centre’s website: https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/
