Congratulations, Pauline!

One of Withernsea High School’s current longest-serving members of staff was recognised for her dedication to the school this week when she was presented with a long-service award.

Pauline Steele joined Withernsea High School as an assistant cook in September 1991. Since then, she has established herself as a friendly, hardworking and dedicated member of the kitchen team – helping to prepare and serve literally thousands of school dinners to students and staff over the course of 26 years.

The award, issued by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, recognises recipients who have sustained at least 25 years continuous service within the council and its constituent authorities.

Commenting on the recognition, Pauline said: ‘It’s really nice to be recognised like this. Not many people reach 25 years and it feels good to achieve something. I love the job and I really enjoy working in the school. The teamwork is amazing.’

Now a cook in her own right, working in a team of people under the direction of School Chef Graham Clark, Pauline continues to be at the forefront of school meal provision and the constant changes that come with it.

One such change was the recent introduction of Cashless Catering to the school’s canteen - a system which Pauline embraced early on and championed after a visit to see a similar system in operation at another school.

Business Manager Sarah Evans commented: ‘Pauline is awesome. She is a much-valued and respected member of our kitchen team. She always has a positive outlook and is an asset to the school. She is always happy to embrace new technology and was one of the key people in ensuring the Cashless Catering system was a success when we launched it in July.’

Headteacher Richard Williman added: ‘We are delighted that Pauline’s long service has been recognised by the local authority. This is service which she should be justly proud of. To have devoted such time to the school, she deserves special praise and mention on behalf of everyone she was worked with or served in her time in the canteen. Huge congratulations and well done.’
