BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Dance)

The BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Dance) will give you an understanding of the performing arts with a specific focus on the essential skills, techniques and disciplines of the dance profession.

The qualification provides you with an insight into the employment opportunities available helping you to choose a career path or move on to further study in the performing arts.

What will I Learn?

You will study 2 core units and 3 specialist units over the 2 year course

  • PERFORMING TO AN AUDIENCE (core unit) This unit will give you the opportunity to undertake, prepare and perform a dance repertoire as part of a dance company presenting work to an audience.
  • DANCE APPRECIATION (core unit) In this unit you will view examples of choreography from a wide range of genres and styles and you will reconstruct short extracts from those professional works. You will observe a wide variety of material on film and live performance and you will be guided through a system of analysis to help you understand what you see when you watch dance.

How will I be Assessed?

Work is assessed through portfolio and performance work which provides evidence that you have covered the relevant areas and have developed the necessary skills and understanding.This means that it is important to keep your work up to date.Work is internally assessed by your teacher(s) and a sample of work is selected for external verification by a visiting BTEC verifier

What are the Entry Requirements? Most students who takeDance in the sixth form have done the BTEC first diploma in dance at key stage 4. However some students choose the course with no prior qualifications because they have an interest in dance as a hobby or they think it will compliment their other course choices.

Future Opportunities?  Further education courses at colleges or universities to study one of the many Performing Arts related courses. Entry to a specialist Dance School to study the profession of Dancer or Choreographer. Entry to employment in one of the many Performing Arts sectors.
