Curriculum

For specific details on curriculum options see the "Option Booklet"
Individual young people have different skills, qualities, aspirations and needs, which makes developing a relevant curriculum an exciting challenge. In order to fulfil their ambitions, students need to follow a curriculum which engages and motivates them, and offers a route to prepare them for the next stage in their learning. We feel that we meet effectively the challenge of addressing the learning needs of students at Withernsea High School, with a balanced curriculum throughout all years of the school, which offers a range of experiences and opportunities.
Key Stage 3 & 4
In Key Stage 3 and 4 students will follow a diet of compulsory subjects, which will give them a firm foundation for their learning post 16. These subjects are determined largely by the National Curriculum, but the way students learn will vary between subjects, giving students something that will excite and challenge them.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 students follow some compulsory subjects, but are also able to select other areas to specialise in. These subjects offer a range of opportunities and different learning styles, with both academic and vocational learning available. Students can also opt to study a diploma, which would mean a substantial amount of time devoted to one vocational area, and will be delivered in partnership with other schools.
Details of all these courses can be found in our
Options booklet.
Post 16
Post 16 students with the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above can study in our 6th Form, which has a wide range of 2 year level 3 courses available (A levels and BTEC Vocational courses). Information on all these courses can be found on the East Yorkshire Common Application Process at: https://www.logonmoveon.co.uk/CAP/Home.aspx
Students, who have not gained enough GCSEs to follow level 3 courses post 16, can follow a one year course (worth 4 GCSEs at C or above) to act as a bridging year to access higher level courses at a later date. Information can also be found on the web-site above.
For some students the basic curriculum offered to most students will not be appropriate. We have well-established alternative learning programmes, tailored to meet the needs of individuals. For more information about these please contact Mr Wardman at the High School.
